WATERisLIFE Global

Mission Description
Our mission is to provide safe water to vulnerable communities in Africa and Latin America. We focus on immediate relief and long-term sustainable initiatives, through filtration technology; activation and equipping of existing water sources; and strong community engagement.
The Project
Since 2023, in partnership with the youth group Mtaa Safi Initiative (MSI), WATERisLIFE has transformed a former dumpsite into a safe water access point and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facility in Kibera—one of Kenya's largest and most densely populated informal settlements, where over one million people lack access to essential services. This project now provides safe drinking water, hot showers, toilets, and washing stations to over 5,000 people, all powered by solar energy and designed to be both self-sustaining and affordable. Local youth manage on-the-ground operations, generating income while building leadership skills and reinforcing their commitment to community well-being. We are now preparing to take the next step with Phase 2, which focuses on the maintenance and expansion of this project. At WATERisLIFE, we believe that project durability is key to achieving long-term, sustainable impact. To ensure this, we are seeking funding to increase solar panel capacity, ensuring the system’s continued sustainable operation. Additionally, studies indicate a need to excavate and deepen the existing well to access a higher-capacity aquifer, which will meet the growing water demands of the area. This effort will also require a more powerful pump and an optimized piping system. Furthermore, we see it as essential to support MSI youth with leadership and management training, equipping them with the skills necessary to lead and expand these WASH centers in the future. With your support, we aim to elevate this initiative and, ultimately, replicate this model across other areas of Kibera, contributing to safe and dignified water access in this and other communities.
The Impact
Phase 2 of the YOUTHxWASH project will significantly impact Kibera by improving infrastructure for safe drinking water and hygiene services. With an expanded solar energy system, increased water pumping and storage capacity, and a deeper well, we aim to continue making a high-quality impact on the 5,000 people in this sector of Kibera, especially for over 2,000 girls and women who save time fetching water and need a safe space to meet their hygiene needs. Access to safe drinking water will help reduce water-related illnesses and improve the community's overall quality of life. Additionally, MSI, the organization managing the project, offers affordable water, hot showers, and bathroom access, generating income that is reinvested into community initiatives. Improved infrastructure will allow MSI to expand its services, increase revenue, and develop new projects that benefit the community. Phase 2 will also empower WATERisLIFE to replicate this model in other areas, promoting safe and sustainable access to essential resources.
